New York Fashion Week: How to get Tommy Hilfiger's nautical look

At Housekeep, we like to take inspiration for interior design and home decor from everything around us - especially the latest catwalk looks from Fashion Week

Whilst the Autumn/Winter Fashion Week 2015 in New York saw white, rose gold and blue colour schemes stand out from the crowd - this Autumn, we're looking to the sea.

Tommy Hilfiger headlined Day 5 of NFYW 2016, by reinventing the nautical look.

Is nautical the new black? The answer to that is yet unknown - but what we do know, is that this nautical look is super simple to imitate in your home.

Here's how:

Opt for Gold or Brass Home Accents

2015 saw copper make a bold move forward as the favourite metallic in home decor blogs & magazines. 2016 sings a different tune, with the experts predicting a comeback for gold & brass home accents. Set a subtle nautical tone in your home with a beautiful brass lamp, and add a few striped flourishes to really nail the TH Altantic theme.

Choose Stripes over Spots

With nautical, it's never best to stick to the straight and narrow  - go for statement stripes that make an impact, and that your house guests will notice. Bold navy and white stripes can add serious character to an otherwise plan, white room. Match these stripes with natural wooden accents or distress your new cupboards to create that sea-side feel. It's all about keeping it simple, sophisticated and stripe-driven.

Never say no to Navy

When looking to create an elegant nautical theme in your home, you just can't go past Navy & White. There are very few other colours that go so well together. These two? A match made in decor heaven- they'll literally never go out of style. Match them with gold flourishes & a natural materials like the chairs in the image above - and you've got an elegant nautical feel with little to no effort.

Keep it Minimal & Focused

The trick with getting the nautical theme right - is not to overdo it. As you can see in the bathroom above, the navy block colour for the vanity, gold faucets and handles, combined with the round mirror (resembling a porthole), makes for a very subtle nautical feel, yet remains classy & elegant.
