Although we all have those miracle products we swear by, it’s hard to deny the benefit of using natural and homemade cleaning products - especially for those of us who suffer from allergies, or even those who want to be a little more economical. We’ve made a list of the easiest and least time consuming that you can try, using ingredients commonly found in most homes.
Why should I use them?
Other than being more affordable than branded and manufactured products, natural homemade solutions are great for those with pets, as they don’t cause irritations. And for those who can’t stand the smell of strong chemicals, you can make your own mixtures using your favourite natural scents!
What do I need?
- Olive oil
- White vinegar
- Water
- Cider vinegar
- Lemons
- Essential oils (optional)
- Salt
- Cloths/empty spray bottles
Stainless steel cleaner (olive oil)
Use a soft cloth to apply olive oil in a circular motion, and use white vinegar to wipe the surface when you are finished. This works well on the front and hood of stainless steel cookers, kettles and appliances, and kitchen workstation handles.
Glass cleaner (cider vinegar)
Firstly, try to find an empty spray bottle that you can decant your mix into. Combine 2 cups of water with about ½ a cup apple cider vinegar (you can add any kind of citrus juice to leave your surfaces smelling fresh). Once sprayed, we recommend using a microfibre cloth to clean mirrors, windows and shower doors.
Surface cleaner/degreaser (lemon juice)
Lemons are naturally antibacterial, and leave your home smelling fresh! Again, you need to find an empty spray bottle - these can be found at most garden shops. Combine 1 cup of water with the juice of 2 lemons, and add ½ a cup of white vinegar. You can also add essential oils if you wish - lavender and orange both work well.
Pan cleaner/degreaser (salt)
It’s surprisingly simple to remove burnt on stains from the bottoms of pans and baking tins - just use salt! Pour salt over the area and leave for a few minutes. Salt is naturally absorbent, so once you scrub the bottom of the pan with a damp sponge, your metal will be clean and grease-free!
Fabric softener (white vinegar)
This is a great money saver - white vinegar is excellent at softening fabric and preventing creases. Just add about half a cap, and no, it doesn’t smell at all! Recommended for those who suffer from allergies or irritations from chemical fabric softener.
Bathroom cleaner (grapefruit)
You’ll find lots of synthetic products which smell (vaguely) like grapefruit, but the natural scent is definitely the best. Just half a grapefruit, add some salt on top and use in scrubbing motions over bathtubs and wall tiles. The abrasive side will remove most tough stains, and will smell lovely afterwards. You’ll also benefit from the natural antibacterial properties. Make sure to rinse afterwards using the showerhead.
Wood polish (lemon juice/olive oil)
Wood can easily lose its life and shine, and become stained by everyday items like coffee cups. To restore some beauty to your wooden furniture, use a bowl to mix 2 cups of olive oil with 1 cup of lemon juice. Dip a clean cloth into the mix and apply to wood in circular motions. This has a moisturising effect and can also prevent splits and splinters.
