Insider Tips: 7 Great Cheats from the Housekeep Team

The team here at Housekeep definitely have all the best cleaning tips and tricks, which we share with our customers, our housekeepers and even each other. However, there’s one person who probably knows more than anyone else, and that’s our Recruitment Manager Lindsey. She interviews our fab new housekeepers every day, testing their skills and letting them in on her own handy cleaning hacks. So, we’ve decided to compile a list of her 7 best handy hints so far.

  1. Don’t be tempted to use too much product

We know that they smell nice, and that they leave your place feeling super fresh, but sometimes too much product can be a bad thing. For example, if you use too much floor cleaner, your lovely sparkling floors will soon become sticky and more dirty than they were to begin with.

2) Never use bleach

We know it leaves everything amazingly clean, but it’s so easy to stain your floors, surfaces and textiles using bleach. It also smells very chemically which doesn’t exactly create a pleasant atmosphere. We recommend using a cream cleaner instead, like Cif, which does the same job and smells like lemons!

3) Use Fairy liquid (for everything)

If you’re running low on cleaning products and need to make do, Fairy liquid can be used as a great multi-surface cleaner and degreaser. Just make sure to dilute it with plenty of water first.

4) Start in the kitchen

Always start cleaning your home in the kitchen. It’s a great way to focus, and it’s nice to have a communal area cleaned first - it makes the rest of the clean so much easier. Once the kitchen is clean, move on to the bathrooms, and do the bedrooms last.

5) Don’t use metal scourers

This is a big no-no in the Housekeep office. Some people use these on metal taps and sinks to remove limescale however this often causes scratches and damage. You’re better off using a strong product like Viakal (limescale remover), as the cost of the damage is really not worth it.

6) Microfiber cloths are your best friend

Forget glass cleaner - the best way to clean a mirror is with a tiny bit of water and a microfiber cloth. This ensures your glass and reflective surfaces are left streak-free. You can also do this to remove the dust on your TV, as products can damage the screen.

7) Lay tin foil on the floor when cleaning the oven

Oven cleaning products can be quite corrosive, so it’s always a good idea to lay some tin foil on the floor beneath your oven when you clean it. Product quite often can leak out of the bottom of the door, which can be a disaster if you have wooden floors, or something more expensive like stone. This is a must!
