Local information about Thornton Heath
Thornton Heath is a suburb in the south London borough of Croydon.
The suburb has been expanding since the latter half of the Victorian era, as is reflected in the local architecture. There are streets with smaller terraced Victorian houses, as well as semi-detached period properties with large bay windows and front gardens converted to driveways. More recent 20th century development is also evident throughout the suburb, so purpose-built flats and post-war homes are also prominent on the market.
There is also other significant architecture in Thornton Heath, notably the Victorian-built St. Paul’s Church, that dates back to 1971. Until this century, there were also Victorian swimming baths remaining, although this has now been replaced by a state-of-the-art leisure centre with great recreational facilities for locals.
Although quite far south of the city, Thornton Heath is still well within sensible commuting distance of the capital. Trains run every ten minutes from Thornton Heath railway station to Victoria, and other services run twice hourly to London Bridge.
