Welling, in the now-London borough of Bexleyheath, is a former Kentish town, popular with London commuters. Situated on the Roman road that connects London and Dover, the area has had settlers for centuries.

In the years between the World Wars, land was purchased by developers to build affordable houses for working families. Previous to this, the council had begun projects to build social housing in the town earlier in the century.
