How much does it cost to hang a door?
The average cost to hang a door is around £135, including VAT (£70 - £200), plus the price of your new door.
The total cost you'll pay will depend on a few factors (which we'll cover off later in this guide), but the type of door you're fitting will probably be the biggest factor. The heavier or more complex the door, the more hours are required to fit it. For example, fitting an external door will usually cost more than hanging an internal door.
While carpenters are most commonly used for door fitting, most handymen can also do the job. Charges are usually hourly, although some tradespeople may charge per door fitted instead.
Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to pay to hang a door in London and across the rest of the UK.
| Door type | Average cost (London) | Average costs (rest of UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Internal door | £85 inc VAT (£60 – £110) | £70 inc VAT (£50 – £95) |
| Glazed internal door | £135 inc VAT (£110 – £160) | £115 inc VAT (£90 – £140) |
| Fire door | £240 inc VAT (£180 – £300) | £200 inc VAT (£150 – £250) |
| External door | £325 inc VAT(£250 – £400) | £275 inc VAT(£200 – £350) |
Door hanging prices in London are typically around 20% higher than elsewhere in the UK. Even if you don’t live in London, there may be additional costs to consider, such as parking fees or petrol, especially if you live in more rural areas.

The cost of your new door can vary widely depending on the material, design, and whether it’s internal or external. Labour costs for hanging the door are just one part of the total expense — the door itself can often cost more than the installation.
Internal doors are much cheaper than external doors, as they don’t need to be weatherproof or secure. External doors are insulated, secure, and weather-resistant.
In the UK, fire doors must comply with government standards such as British Standard (BS) 476 Part 22 or BS EN 1634 Part 1, which cover fire resistance and testing. [1]
| Door type | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Hollow internal door | £30 – £70 |
| Solid internal door | £60 – £150 |
| Glazed internal door | £80 – £200 |
| Fire door | £80 – £250 |
| PVC external door | £500 – £1,200 |
| Composite front door | £700 – £2,000 |
| Solid oak internal door | £120 – £350 |
What other factors affect how much it costs to hang a door?
Several other factors can influence how much you’ll pay to have a door fitted, such as the condition of your door frame, who you book with and when you book.
1. Condition of the door frame
Even the most skilled carpenter or handyman can’t make a door fit perfectly if the frame is damaged or uneven. Warped, cracked, or misaligned frames may need to be repaired or adjusted before the door can be hung correctly. Extra work on the frame will, of course, increase labour time, which will raise the overall cost.
2. How many doors you're fitting
As most tradespeople will charge an hourly rate, fitting multiple doors at once often works out cheaper per door than installing a single door. Some may even offer a discounted per-door rate if you’re having a full set of doors installed in your home.
So, if you’re planning a larger project, such as replacing all the internal doors in your house, you’ll often save money by booking all the doors together rather than scheduling each one separately.
3. If you need your old door removed
If you’re replacing an existing door, a standard internal door will take around 10 - 30 minutes to remove.
For heavier or more complex doors, such as fire doors or external doors, removal can take up to an hour, especially if hinges are old, screws are stripped, or the door is stuck in the frame.
Some tradespeople include removal in the overall installation cost, while others may charge separately, particularly if the old door needs to be disposed of.
4. When you book
Carpenters and handymen often charge higher call-out fees for bookings outside of normal working hours, including weekends, early mornings, late evenings, and bank holidays.
You may also pay a premium for last-minute bookings, such as same-day or next-day.
5. Who you book with
The type of tradesperson you hire can also affect the cost and experience of hanging a door. You generally have two options: independent handymen/carpenters or trading through a company or agency.
Independent handymen or carpenters
Pros:
- Usually cheaper than agency rates (especially if they work below the VAT threshold)
- Usually prefer cash payments
Cons:
- Quality can vary, especially if they don’t come recommended by a friend or neighbour
- No cover if they’re sick or on holiday
- No formal complaints procedure
- May not accept card or bank transfer
Agency
Pros:
- Vetted & insured
- Quality assured
- Cover tradespeople in case of sickness or holiday
- Access to a customer support team
- Offer card payments options
Cons:
- Tend to charge higher rates
- Usually won't accept cash

Technically, yes - you can hang a door yourself if you have the right tools and some DIY experience. However, door installation requires accurate measuring, precise trimming, and perfectly aligned hinges. Mistakes can lead to problems like:
- Doors that stick or won’t close properly
- Uneven gaps around the frame
- Damage to the door or door frame
While internal doors are generally easier to install, fire doors and external doors are much more complex. Fire doors, in particular, must be installed by a competent and accredited person to meet building regulations. [1]
Where can I find a tradesperson to hang a door?
Many independent handymen and carpenters offer door hanging services. You can find them by asking friends, family, or neighbours for recommendations. Or you can check local community boards or social media groups.
It's usually quicker to book through a trades platform or agency - like Housekeep. Just tell us about your door fitting, and we'll let you know how much it will cost. We'll send a fully insured, tried and tested handyman to hang your door at a date and time that suits you.
