Are there any other additional costs associated with tap installation?

If you're not replacing a tap like-for-like, additional work is usually required. More complex installations, such as wall-mounted or motion-sensor taps, often involve modifying existing pipework, installing electrical connections (for sensor taps), or adding extra fittings. This of course this means installation takes longer, hiking up labour and material costs.

For wall-mounted taps, your plumber will need to drill a hole into your wall to fit the new tap and connect it to the existing plumbing. While your plumber will try their best to keep damage to the wall to a minimum, plastering and paintwork will need to be done afterward. Many plumbers won’t offer this as part of their service, so you'll need to book a painter and decorator to finish everything off.

How long does it take to install a tap?

It typically takes around 1–3 hours for a plumber to install a tap, depending on the type of tap you're installing and the condition of your plumbing. A like-for-like replacement is usually much quicker, while installing a brand-new tap that requires reworking the plumbing will take longer.

What are the signs a tap may need replacing?

There are often signs that it’s time to replace a tap, such as a constant drip or low water pressure. While some issues can be repaired, if you’re constantly calling a plumber, it’s usually more cost-effective to replace the tap altogether.

1. Dripping tap

A constantly dripping tap is a tell tale sign that it’s time for a replacement, especially with older taps. Many people try to fix the issue by forcibly turning the tap off, but this only wears down the washer ring (AKA the seal). If your tap starts dripping not long after after replacing the washer ring, it's time for a new one.

2. Damaged chrome

If your chrome taps are peeling and pitting, it may be time to replace them. You can rechrome taps, but usually this costs more than just getting a replacment. To keep chrome taps looking good for longer, avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners and always buff them dry after they get wet.[1]

3. Poor water pressure

If you’ve noticed a gradual decrease in water pressure, it could be due to a buildup of limescale or rust inside the tap. If the buildup is thick and stubborn, it can be difficult to remove - so in this case, replacing the tap is usually the best option.

Can I install a tap myself?

While it’s certainly possible to install a tap yourself, it’s not recommended. You’ll need specialist tools and products, and by the time you figure out the installation process, it may actually be more cost-effective to hire a professional plumber.

A professional plumber can advise you on the best tap for your kitchen or bathroom. Plus, hiring a professional gives you peace of mind, knowing the job is done properly - whether you’re installing a brand new tap or replacing like-for-like. They’ll ensure everything is sealed correctly, with no leaks, and ready to be used for years to come.

If you're renting, you'll most likely need permission from your landlord before installing a new tap or any other plumbing adjustments such as adding a new shower. You'll usually be required to provide details of a fully qualified and insured plumber to carry out the work.[2]
