Local information about Barbican
Barbican, or 'the Barbican Estate', is a sprawling housing complex located within the City of London. The Barbican is home to over 2000 flats, houses and maisonettes in the EC1 area.
The area, formerly known as Cripplegate, was largely wiped out during the Blitz attacks of the Second World War. In the post-war years, there were extensive discussions about how to rebuild the area, which eventually resulted in the development of the now iconic Barbican Estate. The tower blocks and apartments that stand today were built during the 1960s and 1970s, and were originally targeted at city professionals. In the years since, the area has remained popular with city workers who are keen to live in Central London, just a stone's throw from the financial district.
Barbican is famous for its unusual Brutalist aesthetic, and is the home to multiple culturally significant organisations, including the Museum of London, the Barbican Centre and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
The Barbican Estate has a population of 4000 people, which is over half of the population of the City of London district.
The Barbican tube station is serviced by the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, with more transport options available at the nearby Farringdon, Moorgate, St. Pauls and Liverpool Street stations.
