Local information about Whitechapel
Whitechapel is an area of East London, situated in the borough of Tower Hamlets. Whitechapel is part of the traditional ‘East End of London’ and is now home to a multicultural and varied population.
For crime buffs, there are plenty of attractions in the area. ‘The Blind Beggar’, a pub on the corner of Whitechapel Road and Cambridge Heath Road, was the scene of the infamous Ronnie Kray murder of George Cornell in 1966. There are plenty of Jack the Ripper tours throughout the area too, which capitalise upon the area’s dark history, and prove popular with tourists.
For entertainment, the nearby Brick Lane is home to an array of vintage shops and curry houses. Via Brick Lane, Whitechapel is short walking distance from Spitalfields and the Old Spitalfields Market, with great food as well as high street brands and independent stalls.
Whitechapel is a very well-connected part of London, and is serviced by various nearby tube stations. The District and Hammersmith & City lines run through Whitechapel and Aldgate East, and the area is walking distance from Liverpool St. for National Rail links, as well as underground connections.
For property in the area, there are many Victorian terraced houses, as well as a range of twentieth-century flats. Newer apartments have also appeared lately, offering even greater choice for those buying or renting in the area.
