Local information about West Ham

West Ham is a district in the London borough of Newham. The area is famous as the home of West Ham United F.C.

Although West Ham’s football has moved from the historic Boleyn Ground in Upton Park to Stratford, the area is still strongly recognised for its football heritage. The club has been named after the London district since the turn of the 20th century, and has competed throughout the various echelons of English football ever since.

The property landscape of West Ham features social housing, much of which is now privately owned, as well as purpose-built flats. Historic examples of this include the Kier Hardie Estate in Canning Town which is named after the progressive labour MP for West Ham South in late-Victorian times. Period terraced houses also offer options for family homes in the area. Newham’s regeneration in the run up to - and the immediate aftermath of - the Olympic games has also seen modern developments including the emergence of new apartment builds.

Canning Town and West Ham tube stations are both great ways to get into the city for commuters from West Ham. Between these two stations, locals have the choice of DLR, Jubilee District/Hammersmith & City, Overground and National Rail service.
