Located within the London Borough of Newham, Canning Town (E16) is a district of East London. Historically considered a part of the county of Essex, Canning Town is situated on the former Royal Docks to the north of the River Thames.
Traditionally, housing in Canning Town has consisted of 19th century workers' homes and other Victorian terraced housing. The area is currently subject to a long-term regeneration plan, that will see thousands of new flats and houses being built within the area.
Canning Town is close by to Stratford, home to the Westfield Shopping Centre and West Ham United, who play in the Olympic Stadium. In fact, it was in Canning Town that Thames Ironworks F.C, the team that would later become West Ham United, first started playing football.
